  1. How soon can I start the tests?

In pigs you can perform the tests between 18 and 75 days; however, the highest accuracy is achieved when the tests are performed between 25 and 35 days. In this period there is the highest level of amniotic fluid in the uterus, therefore it is located the most easily. In ewes the tests should be performed between 60 and 120 days (however, the most favourable conditions for testing are after 90 days), in goats from 40 days (the most favourable conditions between 50 and 60 days).

  2. What is the accuracy of performed tests?

In case of totally healthy animals and when the basic rules are met while performing the tests, the accuracy of even 100% can be achieved.

It should be remembered that the best time for testing is:

    • in pigs – from 25 to 35 days
    • in ewes – after 90 days
    • in goats – from 50 to 60 days.

  3. What are the basic guidelines on how to perform tests?
    • the tests should be performed in the morning when the animal has defecated, before meals. Otherwise false readings might be obtained, coming not from the uterus but from the full urinary bladder or stomach.
    • always use oil (food or technical oil) to maintain a good contact with the animal skin
    • in case of ewes it might be necessary to remove fat-sweat as it may make it difficult to perform a test
    • ensure the animal is as calm as possible during a test

  4. How can I check if my instrument operates properly?
    • connect the probe with the instrument using a provided cable and turn the instrument on (a green light should appear)
    • wet the probe head with water and press it to the inner side of the palm (in the thumb’s base); you should hear even sounds (at 1-sec intervals) and the green light should blink at the same frequency. It is a signal of good contact.
    • immerse the probe head in a container with water – sound and light signals should increase their frequencies. It is a “pregnancy” signal – in this case it is the reflection of waves from the water in the container.

  5. Which animals is the Tester intended for?

Our company manufacture 3 types of the Ultrasound Pregnancy Tester. It might be used for pigs, ewes and bitches. The version for ewes might also be used successfully in goats.

  6. What is the rule behind the Pregnancy Tester?

The tester detects the presence of amniotic fluid in the uterus. It uses a phenomenon of ultrasound wave reflection. The probe which is placed on the female body sends a beam of ultrasounds which reflects from the uterus horns filled with fluid and returns, causing a change in the signal generated by the instrument.
