  6. What are the main guidelines about the use of the Estrous Detector?
  1. How can I check if my detector operates properly?
    • turn on the instrument in the open air, “0 1” should be displayed in the screen
    • prepare solutions of kitchen salt at different concentrations. Immerse the detector probe in each solution and check if it reacts correctly (the higher the concentration the lower the readings should be)
    • while inspecting the instrument always ensure that the probe electrodes are clean and there is no “LO BAT” displayed in the screen which indicates low battery levels.

  2. Does the way of using the instrument affect the readings?

Yes, it does. The angle at which the probe is introduced into the vagina as well as the probe length influence the readings. For that reason we recommend to perform measurements always in the same or similar manner.

  3. Is it possible to determine early pregnancy with the Detector?

Yes, it is possible in the determined period after insemination (in cows it is after 3-4 weeks). If the Detector’s readings still remain high (in cows it is about 300 units or more), it means that the animal is pregnant. Obviously the interpretation is valid for completely healthy animals.

Decreasing readings (in cows about 200 units or less) after insemination indicate that the animals are not pregnant and that subsequent heat is approaching.

  4. Which animals can the Estrous Detector be used for?

DRAMIŃSKI Company manufacture the following versions of the instrument:

    • for cows and mares
    • for pigs
    • for ewes
    • for bitches

These detectors differ mainly with the probe size and location. The user should remember that the test principle is the same in all versions; however, received measurements and interpretations are different for each species.

  5. Which agents should be used to disinfect the detector?

Our company uses Polish disinfecting agents such as BIOVAL or STERINOL. We also recommend a French product, NOBACTEL. However, you can use all disinfecting agents recommended for veterinary use. You must be careful while using these agents when the test is performed shortly before insemination (as the agent may kill sperm cells). In such a case the probe should be rinsed with water after disinfection.

  6. What are the main guidelines about the use of the Estrous Detector?
    • the tests should be performed as often as the manual says, especially, when you are not experienced enough. In the initial period perform tests once a day and later, when the resistance readings increase, twice a day.
    • ensure the probe is introduced into the vagina in the same manner and into the same place every time. If this rule is not met, the readings might be false.
    • perform measurements at the same time of a day, in the morning at best. There are many factors which may influence the readings. When the tests are always performed at the same time, these factors are eliminated.
    • always remember to disinfect the Detector (especially the probe) before and after use.
